Queenstown, Otago

We actually didn't spend much time in Queenstown at all, only one night. It's become built-up and touristy (by NZ standards, anyway), and the weather wasn't all that great that day. Queenstown is great if you're into bungee jumping and other weird sports, and it's great for skiing; however, we aren't into any of those. Lake Wakatipu is very pretty, though. Trivia point: Part of the movie Willow (with Val Kilmer...yum! :-) was filmed in this region (and in Milford Sound).

Also, this is the site of Laurie's major travel eitage, the Fleet Bank ATM card fiasco. She'd brought her Fleet ATM card because it accesses international networks (our National Australia Bank ATM cards aren't on international networks, a major travel eit we encountered in Hong Kong), but when she tried to use it, the machine ate the card. Showing up the next morning and demanding the card back didn't help; she had to call Fleet on Derek's mobile phone. Unfortunately, the people at Fleet insisted that my card had been declared lost, which is why it was eaten, and that once it was declared lost they couldn't reactivate it. Laurie's protestations that she had never declared the card lost and that a new one had never been sent to her notwithstanding, they refused to do anything more than send a new card to our home in Australia. This did not help at all with the fact that she couldn't access cash for the rest of the trip. Thanks a whole f*cking lot, Fleet Bastards.
